Variations in the Branching Pattern of the Celiac Trunk in a Kenyan Population
نویسندگان
چکیده
The celiac trunk is the major source of blood supply to the supracolic abdominal compartment. Usually, it branches into the splenic, common hepatic and left gastric arteries to supply this region. It has however been shown to display ethnic variations in its branching pattern. Knowledge of these variations may be important in surgical and radiological procedures around the head of the pancreas. The aim was to illustrate the commonest variations in the branching pattern of the celiac trunk in a Kenyan population. The study was conducted in the Department of Human Anatomy, University of Nairobi. Were collected one hundred twenty three (123) bodies obtained from dissection cadavers and autopsy cases following ethical approval and consent from next of kin. Gross dissection of the anterior abdominal wall using an extended midline incision and retraction of the liver and stomach was performed. The celiac trunk was trifurcated in 76 (61.7%), bifurcated in 22 (17.9%) and gave collaterals in 25 (20.3%). Dorsal pancreatic artery was the most common collateral and occurred in 14.8%. Other branches included gastroduodenal and inferior phrenic arteries present in 3.3% and 4.9% respectively. The Kenyan population has a higher incidence of bifurcation and collateral branching of the celiac trunk hence need for caution during surgical procedures of the supracolic abdominal compartment.

A Rare Variation in Branching Pattern of the Internal Iliac Artery: A Case Report
Internal iliac artery (IIA) shows frequent variations in its branching pattern. We saw variations in the branching pattern of right IIA in a male cadaver. The IIA divided into anterior and posterior divisions. The branches of the anterior division included umbilical artery, inferior vesical artery, obturator artery. The other branches arose from posterior trunk such as iliolumbar, lateral s...

Dear Editor, I read with interest, the article entitled “Rare variations in the origin, branching pattern and course of the celiac trunk: Report of two cases.” published in Malaysian Journal of Medical Sciences (1). I congratulate the authors for their neat dissection and clear display of the variant arteries. The schematic diagrams also help the readers to understand the branching pattern of t...

Axillary artery, the continuation of the Subclavian artery, initiates at the lateral border of the first rib and normally ends at the lower border of teres major, where it obtains the name of brachial artery. Variations in the branching pattern of the axillary artery are common. During a routine dissection of a 25-30-year-old man cadaver, based on the classic Grant’s method, in the Department o...
متن کاملA Study of Variations in the Branching Pattern of Splenic Artery
Splenic artery is the largest branch from the celiac trunk supplying the spleen, pancreas and the stomach.. It divides into two or three main branches before entering the hilum of the spleen. 21 splenic arteries were studied by dissection method and 2 splenic arteries showed variation in their branching pattern described in the observations. In the cadavers studied, the splenic artery was arisi...
متن کاملSymmetrical variations in the branching pattern of abdominal aorta: a case report
Introduction Information regarding anatomical variations in the branching pattern of great vessels of the abdomen, including abdominal aorta, celiac trunk, mesenteric and renal arteries is imperative for planning surgical procedures and interpreting interventional radiological imaging. In fact, liver and kidney transplantations and oncologic resections require major vessels ligation. Background...
